Podiatric Surgery Q&A

Why would I need podiatric surgery?

Some patients need podiatric (foot and ankle) surgery because conservative, noninvasive approaches haven’t sufficiently improved their symptoms. Or, they could have an acute injury requiring immediate surgical intervention.

Conservative treatments are effective for most foot and ankle problems, like sports injuries, bunions, hammertoe, arthritis, and tendon or ligament injuries. But they aren’t always successful, particularly when conditions reach an advanced stage.

In addition to offering extensive nonsurgical treatments, Dr. Levi is an experienced foot and ankle surgeon who provides exceptional podiatric surgery.

What podiatric surgery might I need?

Podiatric surgery treats various conditions and injuries, including:

Fractures

Fractures where the bone is displaced or misaligned will require surgery. Correct repair restores function and reduces the risk of abnormalities in the healed bones.

Bunions and hammertoe

Bunions and hammertoe are bony foot disorders that can require surgery to reduce pain and permanently correct the abnormality. Surgery straightens and stabilizes the tendons, bones, and joints affected by bunions and hammertoe.

Wound debridement

Debridement removes dead tissue from diabetic foot ulcers (open, nonhealing wounds). It’s necessary to help heal wounds and prevent infections from developing or getting worse. Additional surgeries that podiatric surgeons perform to treat diabetic ulcers include skin grafting and vascular (blood vessel) surgery.

What ankle surgeries are most common?

Surgery might be necessary if ankle damage is so severe that pain, inflammation, and limited mobility affect your quality of life. Common ankle surgeries include:

Fusion

Ankle fusion joins leg and foot bones into one piece at your ankle.

Joint replacement

Joint replacement uses metal and plastic prosthetics (artificial parts) to replace damaged ankle bone and cartilage.

Achilles tendon repair

Tendons that suffer a sudden tear or rupture and those that degenerate over time might require podiatric surgery. Dr. Levi repairs or reconstructs the tendon, relieving pain and inflammation and restoring function.

Ankle stabilization

Repeated ankle sprains or improperly healed injuries can cause long-term joint weakness. Dr. Levi performs a lateral ankle ligament reconstruction to tighten and stabilize ligaments on the outside of your ankle. The procedure eliminates chronic pain and prevents further sprains.

Many podiatric surgeries use minimally invasive techniques. These involve accessing the foot or ankle through several small holes rather than making large incisions. Dr. Levi uses this method where possible because it causes less pain and tissue damage. However, some podiatric surgeries require an open-surgery approach.
